This Zaimokudaki Tour is not very difficult, but the total hiking takes
3 hours. As you will follow some animal paths, which are narrow and unmaintained, a guided tour must be arranged and the entry permit is also required.
The interesting feature of Zaimokudaki is some natural hot springs around the falls.
After hiking for about half an hour, you will get to Zaimokudaki, which means “lumber falls” in Japanese.
The naming seems to be originated from its appearance: the columnar joint(geological or seismological term) looks like pillars of lumber.
The visitors can enjoy the beautiful combination of green caused by moss and dark brown created by hot spring.
It will take approximately 20 minutes from Zaimokudaki to Hisuinotaki (meaning “jade”). Shortly after you walk off the trail and head upstream, the jade-like falls will come in your sight. This double-decked Hisuinotaki is also made of lava. The riverbed was eroded a lot and has such rapid flow downstream that you might try sliding down (at your own risk, of course).
Beside Zaimokudaki you can see the terraces created by the hot spring water.
Watching vapor rising in chilly air will make you will feel inspired by the divine power of Mt. Ontake.
