Details

Mid-May to Late October

※It is possible to explore outside the above period; however, please note that the old Ontake climbing trail from Takebashi to Senjin Waterfall may be frozen and dangerous outside this period.

Starting from the trailhead at Mt. Ontake, this refreshing course takes you through a trail surrounded by towering old-growth trees, typical of the high-altitude, cold climate.

  1. Sennin Falls (20m): A straight waterfall cascading into the grassy valley of the Muddy River’s tributary. It’s believed that ascetic practices were performed under this waterfall. Influenced by hot spring minerals, the water appears milky white with a tinge of blue, while the walls and riverbed are stained red with iron deposits.
  2. Hino Falls (20m): Easily accessible from the hot spring town, this waterfall descends in multiple stages through a narrow gorge, resembling a tube. You can overlook its dramatic descent from an observation platform.
  3. Shiraito Falls (15m): A slanting waterfall flowing from the Yuno Valley’s tributary. Its gentle slope creates the appearance of white threads cascading down, hence the name “Shiraito” which means “white threads”. Yunotani Valley is literally a valley where hot springs gush out.
  4. Unnamed Falls (15m)Located directly beneath the Taki Bridge in the Grass and Tree Valley, this reddish waterfall is covered in lava and can be viewed from above the bridge.

*Note: This area is inhabited by bears. Please take precautions such as making noise to avoid unexpected encounters. Routes may become unclear during snowfall or freezing conditions. Proper equipment and experience are necessary during winter.
